Have you always wondered how your voice would fit into a jazz or blues chord? Want to be a part of the only a cappella jazz group on campus?
Good news! Cal Jazz Choir is holding auditions for the academic year 2018-2019. We are looking for all voice parts. CJC welcomes people from a variety of musical backgrounds, and we offer a unique environment in which people with any level of musical experience will learn a ton and get the opportunity to develop their musical and performance skills. Most importantly, we value a strong team and friendship bond, and have lots of fun together.
Being a member of Cal Jazz choir is an full academic year commitment. The audition process involves a preliminary audition followed by 1 day of callbacks.
First-round auditions take place over around 2 weeks – but you only have to show up to one 1-hour time slot. They are our first chance to hear what you have to offer. They’re open to both undergraduate and graduate students at UC Berkeley. Just prepare a verse and chorus of any song you’d like to perform for us, preferably in the jazz style. We’ll lead you through some basic vocal exercises, test your range and musicianship, and listen to your solo. Each audition lasts for about 15 minutes and auditionees in each 1-hour time slot will be seen by order of arrival.
After preliminary auditions, if we think you might be a good fit for the group, you will be invited to our callbacks. We will be sending you a couple of songs from our repertoire to learn by the day of the callbacks. We will be listening to your solos once again, and then you’ll sing the prepared songs together with the old members so we can gauge your sense of pitch, learning ability, and blend with the group.
If you have any more questions about the audition process, please don’t hesitate to send an e-mail to Business Manager Lucy White at email@example.com.
